My name is Jonene Ficklin, and I'm a full-time wife, mom, writer, and professional artist. I've been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil. I use colored pencils, oil paints, and watercolors. I love what I do!

Is your brain rotting after all that wonderful post-holiday lethargy? Did you make a New Year’s goal to learn something new and completely random? Well you’re in luck.

The word is Kagu. As in the Kagu of New Caledonia.

No, it’s not the latest dance. It’s not a new spaghetti sauce. It’s not even a tropical toe fungus.

It’s a bird - a big one, about 22 inches tall.

It can’t fly.
It barks like a dog.
It struts like Travolta on Saturday Night Fever.
It even has an impressive crest of feathers that rise on demand.

I know, cool, huh?

Did you set another New Year’s goal to add culture to your life? Well, again you’re in luck. Here’s a video clip of our lovely Kagu, set to music from The Nutcracker ballet. You get a two-fer!

Did you set another goal to study geography? Well, guess what, this is your lucky day! New Caledonia is an island just east of Australia.

Now you’re smart, cultured, and well, smart again.

There are worse ways to start to the New Year!

  1. That is one strange bird. It barks like a dog? Wow. Thanks for culturing me today! :)

  2. Leisha, yeah, I figured it's hard to go wrong with birds and ballet music! Have a great week!

  3. That is so cool! I've never seen or heard it before. I like the punk hairdo too!

  4. Lydia, it would be great if hair were so easily controlled with us! Thanks for your interesting blog on "Are You My mother?" That is pretty wild!
